Fomes fomentarius (Gray)

Fomes fomentarius, also known as tinder fungus or hoof fungus, is a fungal plant pathogen found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. It produces large, hoof-shaped fruiting bodies that range in color from silvery grey to black. The fungus infects trees through broken bark, causing rot and continuing to decompose the tree after it dies. Though inedible, it has been traditionally used to make amadou, a material primarily used as tinder but also for clothing and other purposes. The 5,000-year-old Ötzi the Iceman carried pieces of it for tinder. It also has medicinal and other applications.
